The Professional Master's Degree (MP), regulated by Normative Ordinance No. 17, dated December 28, 2009, is a stricto sensu postgraduate program designed to train professionals across various fields of knowledge. It focuses on the study of techniques, processes, or topics that address labor market demands. According to CAPES, the program's goal is to contribute to the national productive sector by enhancing the competitiveness and productivity of both public and private organizations.

The Professional Master's Program in Applied Microbiology, established in 2014, aims to:

a) Train and qualify professionals in Microbiology, with an emphasis on Biotechnology, Clinical Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, and Food Microbiology;
b) Address specific demands and productive arrangements to improve the quality, productivity, and competitiveness of public and private organizations at the national, regional, and local levels, particularly in the development of products or techniques related to Biotechnological Innovation.

The research areas within the Professional Master's Program are:

i) Food Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, and Biotechnology for Special Environments;
ii) Industrial Biotechnology and Vaccines;

iv) Teaching in Microbiology.

The program is developed through strong partnerships between companies, organizations, UFMG, faculty advisors, and students. In this collaborative model, students are responsible for the technical-scientific development of their projects with guidance from their advisors and logistical support from UFMG, including access to spaces and equipment. The financial costs associated with the projects (such as scholarships, salaries, and consumables) are the responsibility of the participating companies or public and private organizations.

The Master's program lasts for 24 months and is offered at no tuition cost. However, the program does not provide scholarships, and it is the responsibility of the companies or public and private organizations to financially support the students.
